Fashion Design Degrees

Can you say Juicy couture?

Many talented creative people are drawn to careers in fashion.  The opportunities include jobs in merchandising, marketing, design, publicity, and general business management.

Designers are the rock stars of the fashion world.  But once their work is done, who gets people to buy what they produce? That’s where fashion marketing comes in. And how do stores decide what to put on their racks, and how to encourage people to buy it?  Enter the fashion merchandising profession.  In an industry where trends come and go like the weather, the ability to predict what’s going to be in fashion and get merchandise into stores in a timely way is key to financial success.  So there’s a brisk industry in predicting, buying and selling fashion.

A successful career in fashion often begins with training at a top college or university focused on fashion and design.  Coursework depends on your area of specialization.  It might include pattern design, clothing construction technique, sales and marketing, the study of textiles, or the financial aspects of running a fashion business.

While many people are drawn to fashion because they aspire to be high-fashion designers working under their own label, far more careers exist working on staff for a major label. This is true not only of designers, but also of marketers, merchandisers, stylists and other positions in the industry.

Job growth in high fashion is expected to decline, while careers in mass fashion merchandising are expected to grow to meet the demands of a growing population that is increasingly exposed to fashion trends through movies, magazines and media.
