Design a Your Own Future with Interior Design
As an interior designer you will enhance the function and aesthetics of interiors spaces. You will use color, texture, furniture, lighting, and space to design a workable and livable space for your clients.  You may find yourself working on many different types of space, including commercial, residential and public spaces, such as terminals, airports, train stations, hospitals, educational institutions, theatres and other areas. You may be called on to improve the use of spaces to help productivity, attract clientele, or increase the building’s market value.

What does it take to be an Interior Designer?
Most interior design positions require a bachelor’s degree given the competitive nature of the current field.  In addition, 24 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico register and license interior designers. Following your training, you may find yourself in a one- to three-year apprentice position before taking a national licensing exam from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.

Typical Earnings for Careers in Interior Design
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the average annual income for interior designers was $40,670 in May 2004. Average annual income in the industries employing the largest numbers of interior designers in May 2004 was:

• Architectural, engineering, and related services $44,740
• Specialized design services $42,000
• Furniture stores $37,750

The salaries within this field vary widely based on your specialty, your employer, the number of years of experience, and your reputation with your clientele. You don’t necessarily have to work in a firm, as many interior designers are self-employed. It is typical in this case to earn an hourly consulting fee, plus a commission on the total cost of the design elements you incorporate into the job.
